Ballet is an art form known for its rigorous technique, flowing and precise movements, lithe aesthetics, and ethereal qualities. Performers undergo years of formal training that comes together as beautiful creative expression on stage. The best part about ballet is that it is an inclusive art form that anyone can appreciate. Even if you are a non-dancer, there are many ways to appreciate ballet!
Take a Beginner Ballet Class
No matter your age, taking a beginner ballet class is a great way to appreciate the fundamentals of ballet. At The School of Ballet Arizona, we offera variety of classes that are welcoming to all. In each class, everyone moves at their own pace. The goal is to feel comfortable and have fun! As each participant learns body awareness and musicality, they’ll begin to express their inner dancer through creative movements. We believe ballet is one of the best ways to feel confident and self-assured.
Attend a Ballet Performance
Another way to appreciate ballet is to attend a performance! At Ballet Arizona, each season features a variety of performances, including choreographed works by our Artistic Director, Ib Andersen, the Father of American Ballet, George Balanchine, and many more. This May, we are ending our 2018 – 2019 season with an immersive performance called Eroica by Ib Andersen. This visionary work takes place at Desert Botanical Garden and has become a fan favorite in the Arizona community.
We’ve also announced our 2019 – 2020 season! Not only are we celebrating 20 years of Ib Andersen’s passion and dedication to the ballet art form, we have an Arizona premiere with Frederick Ashton’s Les Patineurs, August Bournonville’s festive work Napoli, and an exciting retelling of Shakespear’s hilarious tale A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Check outthe calendar for a list of shows.
Get Involved in the Community
When you attend a community ballet event, you get to meet other people who also love ballet and the arts. Finding a community of other people who also appreciate ballet, dancers and non-dancers, will give you an outlet for sharing your ideas and discovering more ballet events near you. Ballet Under the Stars is a free event open to the public that is put on every year by Ballet Arizona. For many Valley residents, this event is their first exposure to ballet. We are proud to offer avariety of community events designed to inspire residents to appreciate the beauty of ballet.
Read a Book About Ballet
Appreciating ballet as a non-dancer can be as simple as reading a book. There are many books, both fiction and non-fiction, that tell stories about the history of ballet and life as a ballerina.Tallulah’s Nutcracker is a classic story for young girls to learn what it takes to perform in front of an audience. For adults, check out José! Born to Dance, a biography about the famed dancer and choreographer.
