What is flamenco dance?
Flamenco is a form of Spanish dance that is used to express emotions. While this style of dance can be used to express any type of emotion, the most popular emotions expressed through flamenco dancing are passion and excitement.
Every flamenco dance is different depending upon the story that is being told or the emotions that are being conveyed. However, regardless of what the dance is expressing or telling, it will feature very distinctive movements that can be found in any type of flamenco dancing. Distinctive movements that can be found in every flamenco dance include lots of loud, rhythmic hand clapping, passionate percussive footwork that involves lots of foot stomping, and extremely intricate, yet graceful full-body, arm, and hand movements.
In addition to very distinctive movements, flamenco also features three very distinctive elements. It almost always includes a dancer who performs the movements, a guitar player who plays the Spanish guitar, and a singer.
The origins of flamenco dance
Like almost all types of folk dance (which flamenco dancing is considered a form of folk dance), it can be difficult to determine exactly where it came from. It is thought that flamenco originated in southern Spain.
Even though flamenco features a lot of characteristics and movements that indicate it comes from southern Spain, there are even more elements that indicate other world cultures may have influenced this style of dance. Certain characteristics and movements from Cuban, Jewish, Latin American and Indian cultures can be found in various Flamenco dances.
