How to Prepare For a Ballet Performance as an Attendee
Symphony Hall before a Ballet Arizona performance.
If you’re planning on attending an upcoming ballet performance by Ballet Arizona, we can’t wait to welcome you. If it’s your first ballet performance as an attendee, you may have some lingering questions. It is our hope that this blog will answer some of those questions and get you excited about the experience.
What should I wear to a ballet show?
This is often the first question we get asked. First of all, we don’t want you to fret too much about what you wear because if you’re comfortable and enjoying yourself, that’s all that matters to us. On the other hand, if you and your group think it’s fun to dress up and make an occasion out of it, then we’d love to see you get dressed up.
Most attendees do choose to dress up a little more than they normally would for an event. This is out of respect and honor for the tradition of the theatre. For example, you’ll likely see flowy dresses and blouses for women and girls, while boys and men usually opt for slacks and a dress shirt. For more information about what to wear to the ballet, check out our past blog.
What is proper etiquette for a ballet show?
When attending a ballet show, we advise you to arrive at least 25 minutes prior to curtain call to allow time for you to park and find your seat. Some of our shows offer a pre-performance chat with the dancers where patrons can get a deeper insight into the production, so if you’re interested in attending that, you’ll want to give yourself a little more time to arrive and settle into your seat. Otherwise, feel free to stay after for the post-performance chat.
When the performance is going on, try your best to stay in your seat until intermission or the end of the show. This is to ensure everyone has an enjoyable experience and to prevent any mishaps that could happen when walking through a dark theatre.
Of course, show your appreciation and admiration by clapping for the performers when appropriate. We also encourage whistles and “bravos” at the end of the performance because the dancers love it!
Should I learn about the show before attending?
If you’ll be attending a well-known ballet performance, like The Nutcracker or A Midsummer Night’s Dream, we recommend brushing up on the story before you attend the performance. Doing a little bit of research ahead of time will provide a rich experience when you’re able to understand the characters and storyline.
The Ballet Arizona website also includes a synopsis of each upcoming show or check out our blog for more in-depth information. You can also find books about ballet at your local library.
