Debunking Ballet Myths

A New Insight!

Pointe Shoe are Made from Wood

It is often believed that pointe shoes have a block of wood that hold up the dancers. However, they are actually made out of layers of hardened fabric, cardboard, and paper. When a dancer is in a pair of pointe shoes, and does a full extension- their feet are supported by a tight, well-fitted pointe slipper. There isn’t any direct weight on their tip toes. To someone just starting out, this is going to feel very different.

You have to be Born Flexible

Most people are not born naturally flexible. How dancers get to their level of flexibility is due to the hours, and years of practice, they put into their craft! Start slow, and do not over strain yourself. Once a dancer’s body becomes more accustomed to stretching, your body will be able to go into deeper positions.

Ballet is Only for Women

Back in the 15th and 16th centuries, only men were allowed to perform. Believe it or not, this sport and art form was male dominated still in the 17th century. Until it became highly popular by women in the 19th century. Without men dancing, ballet wouldn’t be here! It started with noblemen dancing ballet to demonstrate their position in society. It came from the palaces to the theatres!
