Celebrating Pride Month: Watch ‘Ballerina Boys’ (Documentary)

As we celebrate Pride Month and all of the LGBTQ+ dancers and choreographers who have made, and continue to make a lasting impact on the dance world, join Ballet Arizona in watching the American Masters documentary, Ballerina Boys, on PBS!

Ballerina Boys focuses on the iconic Les Ballet Trockadero de Monte Carlo, an all-male ballet company and international phenomenon. Founded in 1974 by a group of ballet enthusiasts, The Trocks, are known for giving a playful side to classical ballet, with dancers performing en pointe and in drag! The message behind the company, however, is much more powerful. Inspired by the Stonewall Riots of 1969 and the creative, fighting spirit of the gay rights movement, Les Ballet Trockadero de Monte Carlo challenges the rigid gender norms of classical ballet. Their performances are a celebration of the artistry and athleticism of their dancers, as well as a message of equality, inclusion, and social justice.

The documentary tells the remarkable history of The Trocks, while following the company on tour. It features original interviews alongside performance footage and culminates with their 2019 performance at the Stonewall 50th anniversary concert at Central Park’s SummerStage in New York City.
