3 Fascinating and Fun Modern Styles of Dance

Dance has been around for a very long time. Although many styles of dance originated several hundred years ago, these three emerged in the recent past.

Here are some of the most fascinating and fun modern styles of dance:

Hip-hop, also known as street dance, originated from breaking in the 1970s. Though you may see some hip-hop dance performed on stage or in film, it has a stronger presence in urban neighborhoods. Mainly danced to hip-hop and rap music, hip-hop is a style of dance that is often improvised and is described as edgy and intense. Derivatives of hip-hop include krumping, popping, jerkin’, locking and more. This style of dance is fun to watch because it is upbeat and raw.

Tap Dance

Tap dance is unique in that dancers use their feet as a form of percussive instruments. It can be performed either with or without music and is said to help promote rhythm in dancers. Tap dancers can wear regular or tap shoes, depending on what type of sound they are trying to create. There are several different types of tap dancing: classical tap, Broadway tap, rhythm (jazz) tap, and post-modern tap. Broadway tap is more choreographed than the rest, while rhythm tap focuses more on feeling the music. We would categorize this style as fascinating to watch because the dancers move very quickly and at a high intensity.

Contemporary Ballet

Contemporary Ballet is often described as a mix between classical ballet and modern dance. Contemporary, contrary to classical ballet, focuses to evoke feeling purely from the dancer’s movement, as well as the music in some cases. It generally focuses on a single idea or feeling rather than a story like in classical ballet (examples: Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, Giselle). Contemporary ballet allows the audience to create their own story depending on how the movement makes them feel. Plus, because the movement isn’t as structured as ballet but rather incorporates classical technique, the movement in most cases is a lot more daring and experimental. This is very fascinating to watch when you don’t know where it’s going.

These modern styles of dance are both captivating and entertaining to watch and perform. Which of these three would you like to learn next? Let us know in the comments!
